Chano UgyoChowk Ma

Chando Ugyo Chowk Ma" (also often heard as "Chando Ugyo Chok Ma Ghayal") is a very popular, old traditional Gujarati folk song and Garba. The title translates to "The Moon Rose in the Courtyard."This song is a classic example of a Lok Geet (folk song) where a married woman is talking to a handsome cowboy or herdsman named Arjaniyo (Arjan), expressing her deep affection and asking him to stop playing his flute because the sound is too intoxicating and may reveal their secret meetings

Chando ugyo chok ma, Ghayal, Chando ugyo chok ma,
The moon has risen in the courtyard, Ghayal, the moon has risen in the courtyard, "Ghayal" (wounded/smitten) and "Laherida" (playful/spirited) are terms of endearment for her beloved, Arjan. The rising moon symbolizes the time for their secret rendezvous.

He Laherida, Haranyu aathmi re Halar sher ma re Arjaniya. O Laherida, the deer (doubt/fear) has set in Halar town, O Arjaniyo. The "deer" (representing fear or hesitation) has vanished, leaving the way clear for their meeting.
--- --- ---
Zanpe taari zhunpadi, Ghayal, zanpe taari zhunpadi,
Your hut is at the gate, Ghayal, your hut is at the gate, Her beloved lives nearby, at the edge of the village.

He Laherida, aavta jaata no nedo laagyo re Arjaniya.
O Laherida, I developed an attachment/bond while coming and going, O Arjaniyo. The love blossomed as she passed his home repeatedly.
--- --- ---
Pavo tu vagaad ma, Ghayal, pavo tu vagaad ma,
Don't play your flute, Ghayal, don't play your flute, She asks him to stop playing the flute.

He Laherida, pavo saambhali ne praan vindhaay re Arjaniya.
O Laherida, hearing the flute pierces my soul/heart, O Arjaniyo. The music is too powerful and moving, or she fears the enchanting sound will expose their secret to others.
--- --- ---
Taare ne maare theek chhe, Ghayal, taare ne maare theek chhe, It's "all well" between you and me, Ghayal, it's "all well" between you and me, Confirming that their secret understanding and relationship are good.

He Laherida, theek ne thekaane velero aav re Arjaniya.
O Laherida, come quickly to our special meeting spot, O Arjaniyo. Urging him to come soon to their agreed place

The song is a passionate and romantic folk ballad, beautifully capturing the longing and urgency of a woman waiting for her secret beloved under the light of the moon.
